In Hypothes.is students are able to engage in meaningful discussions and authentically connect with course material asynchronously. Students are assigned to a video or web article and then identify at least one area that they connected with and explain why. They are then able to view the connections that everyone in the class made. They can see when there is overlap or different perspectives.
CDFR 218 Child Development - Fall 2017
Students viewed childbirth (vaginal and cesearan) and family life across the world (e.g., Sudan) using VR viewers. The 360 degree videos and VR viewers allowed students to immerse themselves, explore the entire environment, and document in detail the observed environment.
Tophat is used in-class to gauge student comprehension after being assigned reading, and student comprehension after a review of material during lecture. This real-time ongoing formative assessment tool allows her to make adjustments or elaborate on course material without singling out students. Below are examples of Tophat slides from a 200 level Child Development course.
Students are asked a question they should be able to answer after reading a chapter that describes conception.
Students respond and most have answered the question incorrectly. The correct answer is not disclosed to the students.
We then review ovulation and fertilization.
After reviewing information from the assigned reading students are prompted to discuss and answer the question again. After review all students are able to accurately apply the course material.
