As an educator she challenges students, facilitates learning, and encourages critical thinking. In each class, when possible she presents real world issues and uses those issues to generate questions and encourage debate. These questions may appear on assignments, during class discussion, or on an exam. Moreover, she requires students to apply course concepts not just memorize information. Finally, as an instructor she intentionally utilize a variety of teaching strategies to support the overall development (cognitive, social-emotional, physical) and learning of a diverse student body. Some of the teaching strategies employed include but are not limited to: case study, discussion, cooperative learning, authentic learning, and technology integration. She is committed to creating an inclusive learning environment and encourages students to use their diverse experiences and perspectives when processing course material. Her goal is always to push students toward growth and prepare for them life after graduation.
She frequently meets with students, exchanges emails with students and/or speaks with students on the phone. Most students (94-100%) report that she is available to them. Generally, students come seeking career advisement, resume writing support, and assistance in course selection. For some they come because she is their academic advisor, but for others they come based on faculty or student recommendation. She also coordinated the department peer mentoring program from 2018-2020. In this role, she provided support and training to the peer mentors.
